Who Will Win The Facebook Mechanic Memes Battle?

Posted March 31, 2014 by Ken Kupchik

There's a battle raging over mechanic entertainment on Facebook. Two Facebook pages, both named "Mechanic Memes" are fighting over mechanic fans and their eyeballs. First, a little background; what exactly is a meme? A meme as we're discussing it is an image, usually with text that is shared on social media. Here's an example:

Now onto the fun part: there are two Facebook pages both called Mechanic Memes. Both regularly post images like the one above to entertain their (mostly mechanic) audiences. Both claim to be the "Real Mechanic Memes" page and both have the same exact profile pictures and headers. So how did this happen and which one is the real page?

The first Mechanic Memes page looks like it was started in February 2013, a little over a year ago. I followed the page around the time it reached 270,000 fans, an impressive number for any page, let alone one focused on something as specific as funny pictures for the mechanic industry. The page was cranking along, adding thousands of new fans daily and posting really funny memes throughout the day. With every new meme posted, the page's fans would tag their friends, who would in turn become fans of the page.

But something really strange happened when the page got near the 350k fans mark. Instead of posting mechanic-related content throughout the day, it started posting links to external websites. These websites were your typical spam-sites, a joke or a comic on a page that was slathered in ads. If you tried accessing the site from your phone, you would get a pop-up asking if you wanted your phone "cleaned." The fans of the page started to revolt, complaining under each new post that the new content had nothing to do with mechanics. The page's numbers (which by this point had swollen to over 400k fans) actually started to decline. It looked like the page's administrator had either made an agreement to promote an outside site's content or had just transferred, or more likely, sold, the page to a third party.

Enter the new Mechanic Memes page. Soon after the first page started posting spam, and it became clear that this was the "new normal" for the site, someone decided to start a new Mechanic Memes page. This one promised "No spam, no BS, just mechanic memes," and that's what it has been doing since it's inception. The page now has 8,205 fans and growing daily, while the other page has seen it's numbers shrink to 398,000 down from the low 400k range. The battle is raging.

At this point, if you look at both sites, you can't tell them apart as each one has the same cover image, claiming that they are the "Real Mechanic Memes" page and each one has now been adding a watermark to their respective images posted. The only difference between the pages is the number of fans and the lack of external, non-mechanic links on the page with the smaller following. Take a look at each page here:

So who will win the Mechanic Meme battle? One page appears to be growing while the other appears to be shrinking, but the gap in fans between the two is still huge. They take jabs at each other throughout the day, both claiming that they are the one true mechanic memes page, but everyone knows there can only be one victor. It's yet to be seen who will be victorious.
